Autumnation by Zhen-Yang (abandoned mansion in Saint Petersburg, Russia)
On the edge: The Cramps play a gig on this day, July 4th, 1978, at an Independence Day party at Peter Ball’s family mansion, Bratenhal, Cleveland, Ohio, along with Pere Ubu and The Pagans.
This gig took place in Lux, Ivy & Nick’s old Cleveland stamping grounds, en route back to New York from California (where they had played their strangest gig ever at Napa State Mental Hospital around 3 weeks before that one). The bands performed on a concrete ledge built into a cliff face overlooking Lake Erie and the audience, various hippies and members of Cleveland’s underground scene, watched from the lakeside 15 feet below, while others were twisting on boats and yachts moored in the lake, later on enjoying the 4th of July fireworks.
The situation proved irresistible to Lux who had this idea of how to surprise his hippie audience and wake everybody up:
“There was a beach there at the time and he ended the set by jumping off a cliff and kept on rolling”
Peter Ball, party host (“Journey to the Centre Of The Cramps”)
In case you also want a piece of the action, here’s a bootleg audio file of “Human Fly” from that gig (and it`s a cracking version): https://soundcloud.com/kctaper/track14
“Unknown Pleasures” by Joy Division, “Violator” by Depeche Mode and “Disintegration” by The Cure as paperbacks. (Standard Designs)
